Maslow's Hierarchy of needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of needs.

Maslow's Hierarchy of need is a theory by Abraham Maslow in year 1943 which basically describe about the needs of a human being. it is explained by dividing the needs to few stages and generally Maslow has tried to apply the theory to every living human.

The theory is very famous among the management and motivation training all around the world and still in the present it has been reviewed and discussed by many people around the world even after so many years from publishing because of the validity and easy understanding and applying to day today management practices.

Theory contains five different titles of human needs as,

1. Physiological needs such as food ,water, warmth and rest which discussed as the very important and      must  needed thing for a person to live.

2.  Safety needs which comes as security and safety matters for a one to live.

3. Belongings and love needs discussed as the relationships of a person with relatives and friends or          any other party.

4. Esteem needs are the prestige or feelings of accomplishments.

5. Self actualization needs described as touching the fall potential of a someone including creative            activities.

The five number of needs above again had been categorized into three units as below.

Physiological needs and Safety needs identified as basic needs.

Belonging and love needs and Esteem needs  identified as psychological needs.

Self actualization needs identified as self fulfillment needs.

Basically Maslow's theory deeply explains the five different needs of a person under the above  categorization which give us a idea that after fulfillment of  basic needs only person can move up to other needs.

"in order to better understand that motivates human beings, Maslow proposed that human needs can be organized into a hierarchy. this hierarchy ranges from more concrete needs such as food and water to abstract concepts such as self fulfillment. according to Maslow, when a lower need is met,the next need on the hierarchy becomes our focus of attention."

However in practical world when we apply the above hierarchy in day today life for myself as a Planter it will become a way of identifying people and look at the people under me in a different angle which will be definitely helpful for me to get the task and targets what i am expecting as a head of around 800 people under me in my tea plantation.

The content of the theory is always acceptable but sometimes the levels of hierarchy can be questioned because as a example if for a new born child first and most important thing to live is need of love which will provide the physiological needs because the child will be feed by her or his mother with full of love comes by the relationship with mother and child.

  1. Within the theory it is a good writing. However in general, those who have gained heights in life sacrificed the bottom layers. This leaves me confused about this theory

  2. If we closely monitor the behavior of our subordinates, we can identify what are the lacking areas when we try to drive them towards organizational goals. We need to focus on aligning our processes towards employee needs and also align the same with organizational goals.
